To: Sonic Team
To: http://www.petitiononline.com/al2d1991/petition.html go sign!

This petition is being written to Sonic Team to aptly demonstrate the frustration of Sonic fans with the recent wave of Sonic games that have been released.

This frustration is evinced on a plethora of gaming websites. However, I believe the website http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2006/12/how...gehog-back.html extensive detailing of the faults with the Sonic franchise and how it may be improved says it all.

The purpose of this document is to draw a response from the current developers and directors of the Sonic franchise. Great deals of video gamers feel underwhelmed by the Sonic experience. With this document it is my hope and the hope of gamers worldwide that Sonic Team seriously pays heed to our opinions and desires. As Sonic fans we feel that Sonic needs to be returned to his roots in both design and story in order to tap into the familiar edge, excitement and wonderment with the original Sonic universe.

It is the prime desire of Sonic fans that Sonic return back to his familiar design of 2-dimensional space:

- Allows for great speed.
- Exhilarating feeling of being the fastest hedgehog ever!
- No downturns in speed from hitting invisible walls or random objects.
- No unforeseeable pits chasms or traps.
- In general no frustration with core game play.

What the fans received in, to name a few, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Unleashed and Sonic and the Black Knight:
- Sonic in 3-dimensional space.
- Loss of tight and quick controls of 2-D Sonic
- Loss of speed due to unforeseeable traps, chasms and objects.
- Frustration!

In 2-D space Sonic is allowed to reach and most importantly maintain high levels of speed! It was always fun to see how long one can maintain speed and how fast a level can be completed:

- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qb6ORAW3-MQ Sonic 2- Speed Run- Part 1
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8n1rDRPpTY&feature=related Sonic 2- Speed Run- Part 2
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpryYBlPoJA&feature=related Sonic 2- Speed Run - Part 3

It is the also the desire of Sonic fans to see Sonic the hedgehog with other animals and not interact with humans besides Robotnik/Eggman:
- Sonic + any human = WEIRD.
- Sonic is a hedgehog not a human.
- He carries out operations primarily with his buddies Tails and Knuckles which are non-human.
- Robotnik/Eggman being the only human makes him seem more menacing and mysterious as to where he came from.
- It was a highly weird moment when Sonic the hedgehog was interacting with the human, Princess Elise in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

What the fans want in new iterations of Sonic:
- Sonic interacting with animals.
- Sonic saving animals captured by Robotnik/Eggman and forcibly placed in capsules http://www.theghz.com/sonic/son1/capsule.gif

It is also the desire of Sonic fans to limit the amount of characters in Sonic Universe down to the essential individuals and elements:

- Sonic
- Tails
- Knuckles
- Metal Sonic
- Planet Mobius
- Robotnik/Eggman
- Helpless Animals trapped in capsules

What the fans got in to name a few, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Unleashed and Sonic and the Black Knight:
- Shadow the hedgehog
- Silver the hedgehog
- Amy Rose
- Were hog
- Chip
- Princess Elise
- Humans
- Other characters that are not the important players listed above or served no purpose in their respective role but to tag along, mottle the story and break the narrative pacing.

Last and probably the most important desire of Sonic fans besides the prime desire, is bringing Sonic back to his home planet, Mobius.
This is highly important because even the very planet becomes and is a character in the original Sonic games. Mobius is quintessential because:

- Sonic has a home and origin.
- It serves as an identifying reference point for Sonic. Mario has the Mushroom Kingdom and Sonic has Mobius.
- It is an interesting locale and gives meaning and purpose to Sonic’s struggle to defeat Robotnik/Eggman.
- Sonic has to save his planet. Saving a planet is cool.

In essence, this document conveys what we as Sonic fans of the world wish to see and experience in the amazing mythos that is Sonic. We ask Sonic Team to give us a true successor to the original Sonic games that is coherent in both visuals and narrative to the universe in which it belongs to.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

I still heavily disagree with this petition, because to me, the majority of modern games just fine - in fact, most of them (out of those I played) are, to me, more fun than the "classic" 2D-iterations.

It is the prime desire of Sonic fans that Sonic return back to his familiar design of 2-dimensional space:

- Allows for great speed.
- Exhilarating feeling of being the fastest hedgehog ever!

That feeling was not often existant in the 2D games, more so in the 3D games, at least for me.

- In general no frustration with core game play.

Again, that often happened to me in 2D, less in 3D.

I always presumed the world of Sonic had humans. Eggman had to come from somewhere, after all.
That, and the "Sonic: Man of the Year" video, as seen on Sonic Jam, definately portrayed a world FULL of humans.
... I do kinda agree that his interaction with Elise was kinda odd, but, then again, it would have been JUST as odd if she'd been an anthromorphic animal such as Sonic himself.

I also thought Eggman largely got rid of the "capturing small animals" bit because the Chaos Drives he uses now are a far better energy source. I don't mind either way.

What's wrong with having a large cast? Each of this characters is liked, "killing them off" or removing them from the universe would be stupid. Keep them, they're an awesome cast, each in their own respect.

The Japanese continuity always had Sonic's world as Earth (an alternate one at that, obviously), Mobius being a creation of the marketing people at SEGA of America and/or Europe.
Since Sonic Adventure, the continuities for the games have been "merged", so to say, leaving Earth as the name of Sonic's World. In the end, the name doesn't really matter, but it'd be stupid to just walk over established canon now.

But that's just how I see it, anyhow.

I don't have time, working on costume for halloween, so I can't rant my own side of this since I very much object to all of this, but I will rant at least about one part of it.

You cannot compair Sonic and the Black Knight to all this other stuff you're compairing.

Sonic and the Black Knight, as well as Sonic and the Secret Rings, do not work in your arguement since they are a completly different thing completly. They are games based off old stories of the past giving a new light to them through Sonic characters. It is part of a series called the Sonic Storybook Series, so you can't compair them to the Sonic VS Eggman thing of the past 2D games since they are not suposed to connect. They are suposed to be completly different things like two sides of the coin, a different little project and a very interesting one Sega stared up, and I very well hope, will continue.

Herman2000 I realize your arguement in regards to the Humans present in the Sonic mythos is valid. Where did Robotnik really come from? Then again I have placed that in the petition and explicityly wrote that Robotnik's presence as the sole human would make him all the more menacing. It would also be a great plot device and it would really flesh out the story in regards to the true origins of Robotnik which few individuals really know, if any. Also I did not write that i wanted the cast of characters to be killed of. I only wish that Sonic Team would have a clearer direction with it's cast that would not interfere with Sonic's edge and actually strengthen him ie: Tails and Knuckles in the original Sonic series. The characters are fine as long as it doesn't garner more ridicule for the Sonic series.
